Lowell’s textile history and old-time “pinewood” derbies inspire this public art spectacle. Come out for a day at the races when hundreds of rolling art mobiles with spools for wheels speed down a 40-foot track built by artists, youth, and community members. Through Stay in School: SPOOL 500, youth from all over the Lowell and Greater Boston region will celebrate the results of their spring and summer workshops with professional artists. In after school programs, in school classes, and in the parks, kids have challenged their creativity, expanded their engineering skills, drawn on their cultural heritages, collaborated with family and friends, and brought their ideas for a mini-art-car to fruition.
